Correspondence, 1787 January-February.

Three letters dated "Camp at Worcester January 1787", "Hadley 30th January 1787", and "Camp at Petersham 5th February 1787" written by soldier Joseph Ruggles to his wife, Joanna Ruggles, in Roxbury. Letters contain references to Shays' Rebellion, description of his activities, health, etc. Donors included some genealogical notes on the families of Joseph and Joanna (Williams) Ruggles, and Obadiah and Nancy (Ruggles) Wright.

Ten companies comprised the 12th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia: five from Boston, one from North Bridgewater, one from Abington, one from Weymouth, one from Stoughton, and one from Gloucester. After organization was completed, the regiment was ordered to Fort Warren in Boston Harbor.
